IRB Roster Question

Well, I've been in this business for 27 years and I thought I'd heard everything, but this is something new. An IRB member informed an IRB administrator that he was going to be changing his name -- from John to Joan!! Does that have to be reported to OHRP as a roster change?? What, exactly, are the criteria for the sex of an IRB member? Cross dressing, transgender, transsexual, pre-op, post-op???? I suggested that they call OHRP for guidance. I'd love to be there when they do!

Hi Jeff,

I would imagine it's a similar concept as when a female marries and changes her name--which should be reported-out to OHRP as a roster change, I would think.

Here is a similar example: when I was doing Union air safety/cabin safety as a Flight Attendant with U.S. Airways some time ago, we had one of our cockpit folks (unfortunate term, that) change his identity to a her. The FAA required a new flight physical and HR had some paperwork to do, but the new senior female pilot continued to do an outstanding job, and U.S. Airways, much to their credit, hardly batted an eyelash.
